Sabeel at the Balkans

Adventure, Learning and Reflection!

Sabeel students recently returned from an inspiring international retreat in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where they delved into the rich histories of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and explored the stunning landscapes of the Balkans.

Accompanied by Shaykh Shaqur and Shaykh Fuad, the students benefited from the reminders and went through a journey of historical discovery.

The itinerary was packed with activities that balanced education, adventure, and relaxation. Students marvelled at the breathtaking Mostar Bridge, an iconic symbol of the country, and enjoyed the thrill of white-water rafting in the pristine rivers.

They indulged in delicious BBQ lunches amidst the natural beauty of the region. Appreciating the majestic masajid built during the Ottoman Empire, immersing themselves in the rich Islamic heritage of the area.

The trip also included sightseeing tours of historic towns, exploring the cascading waterfalls, and swimming in the turquoise waters of the Balkans.

Students were able to witness firsthand the remnants of war, with bullet-ridden buildings standing as silent testaments to the past conflicts. This juxtaposition of natural beauty and historical scars offered a unique learning environment.

Visit to the Tunnel of Hope, was a poignant reminder of the Srebrenica genocide and the resilience of the Bosnian people. Students walked through the tunnel, which once served as a lifeline for the besieged city of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, and learned about the harrowing events that took place during the 1990s. This visit provided a stark contrast to the scenic beauty they experienced and underscored the importance of remembering and learning from history.

This trip was an eye-opener. We came with the expectation of learning about the companions and having fun on the excursions, but we returned with a deep understanding of the country’s recent history and the resilience of its people.
